Vice President, Risk Management
COMPANY:
A leading farmer-owned agribusiness cooperative in the Southeast, serving member-owners across a multistate region. The organization operates across several core agricultural service lines, including farm supply, financing, and processing.
REPORTS/RELATIONSHIPS:
This position will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer and manage the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager and the Property Manager, with responsibility for the performance and management of the Risk Management and Safety Department.
BASIC FUNCTIONS:
The individual who occupies this position will manage the risk management operations of the organization and its subsidiaries and joint ventures, including identifying and evaluating internal and external risks, and designing, developing, and implementing risk management strategies, guidelines, and programs for risk minimization and mitigation.
Specific duties will include, but not necessarily be limited to:
- Develop and implement an integrated risk framework to identify, measure, and monitor all risk exposures across the organization; develop and implement appropriate risk strategies and controls to minimize exposure to loss.
- Develop and manage insurance requirements for contracts and vendors.
- Manage all phases of the claims process, from intake and investigation through litigation, settlement, and/or trial; participate in negotiations, conferences, and mediations with adjusting companies, legal counsel, staff, claimants, and others.
- Oversee three insurance and coverage programs to ensure adequate protection of organization assets.
- Manage three captive insurance programs and incorporate them into the overall risk management strategy.
- Manage relationships with brokers, consultants, and insurance carriers; direct the purchase of all lines of coverage across all three insurance programs.
- Serve as liaison to attorneys, insurance companies, and individuals investigating incidents that may result in asset loss.
- Determine risk retention, risk transfer, and risk financing levels.
- Oversee corporate facilities and property, including present and future property use.
- Oversee EHS programs and ensure compliance with regulatory agencies.
- Make business decisions that are financially responsible, accountable, justifiable, and defensible in accordance with organization policies and procedures.
- Direct the selection, placement, training, safety, appraisal, and discipline of assigned employees.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum of seven years of considerable, progressive, responsible experience in risk management, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience.
- Strong leadership, managerial, and customer service skills, including team building, mediation, and motivational skills.
- Able to design and implement new programs, set goals and objectives, and develop realistic action plans.
- Able to make decisions recognizing established precedents and practices, and to use resourcefulness and tact in solving new problems and interpreting rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Strong analytical and research skills, with the ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and achieve objectives.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, including public speaking and the ability to develop effective proposals and maintain accurate records and reports.
- Standard office, computer, and software applications skills, including spreadsheets, databases, and project management.
- Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Some overnight travel required.
- Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designation preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
