Case Study: General Counsel Search and Placement

The Situation:

A highly acquisitive residential and commercial HVAC and plumbing services company retained CLCB to recruit its first General Counsel after achieving $2 billion in sales. CLCB had recruited the company’s CEO six years earlier under its first private equity owner when the company operated in just one state and had sales just under $25 million. Now owned by another PE investor and having expanded to 20+ states, the company continued an aggressive buy and build strategy. The General Counsel’s mandate was to manage the company’s increasingly complex, multi-state legal and regulatory compliance matters and to reduce the company’s dependence on outside counsel.

The Process:

The CLCB team sought input from the CEO, CFO and head of Corporate Development regarding the scope of the position and key candidate attributes. From this, a detailed position description, search strategy and ideal candidate profile were produced to ensure alignment between CLCB and the client. Through extensive research and aggressive sourcing of in-house and private senior-level attorneys, well known to us from multiple prior chief legal officer searches, the CLCB team recruited a well-rounded, diverse slate of candidate, ultimately resulting in a successful close of the search after eight weeks.

The Results:

CLCB successfully recruited a proven General Counsel who demonstrated extensive experience in high-growth, multi-state services business, building a team and effectively managing the company’s legal and regulatory compliance issues. She has proven to be an effective, strategic partner to our client’s CEO and executive leadership team, as the company has continued growth from 100 to 650 locations nationally.
