Chief Operating Officer
COMPANY:
Private equity-backed, acquisitive commercial contracting company with operations in 30 states and a workforce of over 500 employees.
REPORTS/RELATIONSHIPS:
This position will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer and will oversee all branch operations across multiple states.
BASIC FUNCTIONS:
The Chief Operating Officer (COO) will serve as the operational leader and work in partnership with the executive team and board to drive operational performance and deliver on growth and profitability goals for the company. The COO is responsible for overseeing branch operations, managing consistent and high-quality service delivery for customers, driving to budgeted growth and profit goals, and fostering a performance-oriented culture across all current and future locations. This individual will implement and drive standard operational processes, systems, and metrics across the organization to ensure that the highest standards of quality and consistent performance are met.
Specific duties will include, but not necessarily be limited to:
- Establish an enterprise-wide operational baseline across eight-plus branches in four states, including estimating and operations synchronization, WIP accuracy, cost-to-complete rigor, safety, margin variance, backlog quality, and cash conversion.
- Own operational P&L across the platform; implement disciplined forecasting, job costing, and branch-level KPI scorecards.
- Standardize operational SOPs across estimating, procurement, scheduling, QA/QC, and job close out.
- Conduct hands-on job site audits; validate percentage of completion accuracy; directly review cost-to-complete assumptions with project managers.
- Enforce weekly WIP, cash flow, and hand-off reviews across branches; drive a forecasting accountability culture.
- Strengthen execution in government and institutional markets, including labor, materials, bonding, and contract compliance.
- Build the operational leadership bench by developing general managers and senior project managers, with formal succession planning.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Prior operations management and leadership experience at a rapidly growing, multisite, branch-based, commercial roofing business that is geographically dispersed is strongly preferred.
- While direct industry experience is preferred, operations leadership experience in adjacent, project-based industries (such as HVAC or mechanical/electrical contracting) will be considered.
- Experience operating in an acquisitive, private equity-backed company environment is preferred.
- High energy, self-motivated, and committed to delivering results.
- Comfortable working in the field with trade crews; willingness to spend substantial time onsite with branch management is a must – this role is best suited for a hands-on leader who can work well with, relate to, and successfully manage multilocation branch personnel and trades professionals.
- History of successfully building effective cultures and growing similar-sized businesses.
- Experience establishing systems, processes, and operational KPIs across an enterprise with multiple locations.
- Knowledge of and comfort with M&A due diligence and post-closing integration.
- Analytical mind; comfortable with numbers and strategy.
- Outstanding interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills with an ability to effectively build relationships with the management team, customers, trade crews, board members, and potential acquisition targets.
- Technologically savvy, including experience with field service software; specifically, experience with Procore is highly desired.
- Hands-on experience in project management; early experience as a project manager is a plus; experience managing complex projects/clients.
- Experience with WIP.
- A charismatic, inspirational leader who holds people accountable.
- Building envelope experience is a plus.
- Able to travel 50%+.
