Chief Financial Officer
COMPANY:
Vertically integrated real estate development firm headquartered in the Southeast.
REPORTS/RELATIONSHIPS:
This position will report directly to the President and Chief Investment Officer.
BASIC FUNCTIONS:
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will serve as a key member of the executive leadership team. This is a broad, enterprise-level leadership role with responsibility for the firm’s financial management, reporting, planning, and shared services infrastructure. The CFO will play a central role in scaling the organization, improving operational discipline, and enabling better decision-making across the business. In addition to leading all core finance functions, the CFO will be responsible for defining and executing the capital strategy of the operating business.
While project- and deal-specific capital raising will be led by the Capital Markets team, the CFO will ensure alignment between corporate liquidity, capital structure, and business needs. This role extends beyond traditional finance to include oversight of shared services (HR, IT, and related functions), ensuring the organization operates with clarity, consistency, and efficiency. This individual will serve as a trusted partner to the President and Chief Investment Officer, with broad influence across strategy, operations, and capital planning.
The company is entering a phase of increased scale and complexity. This role is central to building the infrastructure required for growth, improving execution and accountability, and enabling better alignment between strategy, operations, and financial performance.
Specific duties will include, but not necessarily be limited to:
Financial Leadership and Governance
- Lead all aspects of financial management, including accounting, financial reporting, internal controls, audit, and compliance.
- Ensure accuracy, transparency, and timeliness of financial information.
- Establish and maintain strong financial governance across the organization.
Build a Best-in-Class FP&A Function
- Develop and lead a forward-looking FP&A capability, including annual budgeting, long-range planning, and forecasting.
- Deliver actionable insights to support strategic and operational decisions.
- Standardize reporting across business units.
Enterprise Infrastructure and Shared Services Leadership
- Oversee shared services functions, including HR, IT, legal (as applicable), and financial operations (accounts payable, treasury, etc.).
- Build scalable processes and systems that support cross-functional coordination, data integrity, and organizational efficiency.
- Drive consistency and discipline across business units.
Treasury and Liquidity Management
- Oversee cash management, liquidity planning, and banking relationships.
- Provide visibility into short- and long-term cash needs.
- Ensure the organization maintains appropriate liquidity buffers and funding capacity.
- Support capital planning and funding coordination.
Capital Strategy
- Lead the development and execution of enterprise-level capital strategy for the operating business.
- Oversee corporate liquidity planning, capital allocation across business units, and alignment between operating performance and capital needs.
- Maintain direct responsibility for corporate credit facilities and banking relationships at the corporate level, monitoring leverage, covenants, and liquidity position.
- Partner closely with the Capital Markets team to ensure consistency between project-level financing and corporate strategy; provide financial oversight and discipline across capital deployment.
Strategic Business Partner
- Serve as a trusted advisor to the President, Chief Investment Officer, and executive team.
- Support decision-making across development, operations, and asset management.
- Provide financial perspective on key initiatives and tradeoffs.
Corporate Governance and Execution Discipline
- Serve in a pseudo-Corporate Secretary role for the operating business and related entities to ensure accuracy and completeness of corporate records, proper execution of legal and financial documentation, and adherence to governance requirements across entities.
- Drive discipline in approvals, documentation, and execution of key financial and legal processes.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 15 to 20+ years of progressive leadership experience.
- Prior experience as Chief Financial Officer or senior finance executive in a complex, multi-business unit organization.
- Demonstrated track record of building or upgrading finance functions, implementing FP&A and reporting frameworks, and leading organizational or process transformation.
- Experience overseeing or partnering with shared services functions (HR, IT) strongly preferred.
- Deep expertise in financial reporting, FP&A and forecasting, budgeting, and long-range planning.
- Strong analytical and modeling skills.
- Ability to translate financial data into actionable insights.
- Strong understanding of ERP/reporting tools.
- Ability to drive standardization across complex organizations.
- Tech- and AI-leaning mentality; comfortable in tech-forward environments.
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams.
- Strong communication skills with senior executives and stakeholders.
- Experience in real estate, private equity, or similar asset-intensive industries is preferred.
- Familiarity with development and operating platforms, multi-entity structures, capital planning, and liquidity management.
- Proven ability to build and scale finance and operational infrastructure; hands-on, execution-oriented leader.
- Strategic thinker; able to connect financial insights to business strategy; strong problem-solving capabilities.
- Low ego, high accountability; collaborative leadership style; builds trust while driving performance and discipline.
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, economics, or related field required; CPA strongly preferred; MBA a plus.
