COMPANY:
This private equity-owned portfolio company is a growing market leader in their categories with a tremendous team and culture.

RELATIONSHIPS:
This position will report to, and partner with, ­­­­the Chief Executive Officer, serving as a key member of the executive leadership team.

THE OPPORTUNITY:
The CFO will lead a stable financial and operating reporting function and serve as a key member of the senior leadership team. The successful candidate is an energetic, hands-on manager with strong operational capability for contributing to strategic operational matters and decisions. Serving as the financial voice for the business, the CFO will enhance the Company’s reporting and analysis capabilities to further expand the Company’s strategic finance function. The CFO will partner with a well-respected and highly supportive investor group seeking to build the Company for many years prior to a potentially lucrative liquidity event.

BASIC FUNCTIONS:
The CFO is responsible for all financial, accounting, and analytical support for the organization including financial reporting, asset/liability management, budget and forecasting, financial planning needs, lender relationships, treasury management, banking, tax and audit relationships, and IT infrastructure.

Specific duties will include, but not necessarily be limited to:

  • Serve as a key business partner to the CEO to provide strategic direction and leadership to the finance, accounting, and analytical support functions of the company.
  • Oversee the company’s annual budgeting process and forecasting alongside the senior leadership team for the Company’s annual business plan, operating budget, and capital budget; measure and manage ongoing performance against the established budgets.
  • Develop financial models and analyze trends to prepare forecasts, budgets, and management reports.
  • Ensure that the Company’s financial statements fairly represent its financial position and operational results and advise and present to the Board of Directors and other third parties regarding the financial affairs of the Company.
  • Oversee all aspects of internal and external financial reporting and ensure effective design and operation of internal controls over financial reporting and compliance with GAAP and IFRS requirements.
  • Develop, refine, and report on key performance indicators for the business; measure, report, and investigate the Company’s performance; and monitor profitability, cash flow, and financial stability.
  • Oversee the identification and monitoring of financial and operational risks and controls and develop strategies to address those risks.
  • Oversee the treasury function.
  • Ensure systems are in place to manage compliance with all debt covenants.
  • Work with current and potential banking relationships to implement an optimal cash management system.
  • Oversee tax compliance and planning in conjunction with external advisors and ensure the timely and accurate preparation and filing of all tax returns.
  • Partner with, or oversee, the Information Technology (IT) function.
  • Support negotiations, interface with legal counsel and other team members, and serve as the final reviewer for supplier, customer, and operational contract agreements.
  • Work closely with the senior leadership team and Board on add-on acquisitions and other strategic initiatives, including an eventual sale of the company.
  • Develop, mentor, and hire for the financial team to build a succession pipeline and strengthen the finance function’s overall capacity.

REQUIREMENTS:
The successful candidate is a well-respected, high energy, hands-on executive who leads by example and brings a foundation of accounting and operational finance utilizing an inquisitive and value-added approach as more than just a financial score keeper.

  • Ten plus years’ experience in various financial roles with at least three years in a position equivalent to a CFO of a $150 million products business.
  • Experience with a consumer products manufacturing business that primarily sources products overseas and sells through North American retailers.
  • Experience with acquisitive private equity-backed businesses preferred.
  • Knowledge of GAAP, financial accounting, and internal controls, and knowledge of IFRS complex accounting tasks.
  • Experience interacting with external parties such as auditors, investors (public and/or private), lenders, and acquisition targets.
  • Experience overseeing the sale of a business and leading buyer due diligence processes.
  • Successful track record as a strategic business partner to the senior leadership team with prior employers.
  • Understanding of different customer channels of distribution with experience working GTM and customer funding strategies with the largest US retailers.
  • Understand business value enhancement and risk management; provide excellent guidance, counsel, analysis, and recommendations on a broad range of business, financial, strategic and operational issues.
  • Strong operational curiosity and proven ability to work in an entrepreneurial organization as a true business partner with a reputation for adding value outside of their functional expertise; can do what it takes to meet objectives and make tough decisions when needed.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a style that promotes collaboration, discussion, and innovation.
  • Possess an ongoing “continuous improvement” approach along with a proven track record in process/system improvement.
  • An empowering collaborative manager with a demonstrated ability to recruit, develop, inspire, and lead a team in the achievement of objectives and goals; proven ability to develop excellent relationships with a broad range of people both within their organization and in the banking, audit, and investment communities.
  • Strong knowledge of integrated financial and operational management information systems.
  • Excellent oral and written communication; able to effectively explain and articulate strategic, financial, and business fundamentals to a variety of people with varying degrees of financial and business knowledge, both internally and externally; effective and credible spokesperson for the company.
  • Undergraduate degree combined with an accounting designation (CA, CGA, CMA or CPA) preferred.

COMPENSATION:
Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience including base salary, target incentive bonus, and equity. The successful candidate will be expected to invest in the Company alongside the current private equity ownership and senior management team.
