ORGANIZATION:
Charlotte-based YWCA Central Carolinas is a nonprofit on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. Specific programs include transitional housing for women and families facing homelessness, youth literacy programs for children from low-income households, racial justice, and advocacy initiatives that educate and mobilize the community, and a co-ed fitness center that empowers neighbors and serves as a portal into the mission.

REPORTS/RELATIONSHIPS:
This position will report directly to ­­­the Board Chair and Board of Directors.

BASIC FUNCTIONS:
The individual who occupies this position will lead the development of the organization’s strategic goals and objectives, as well as the overall management of the organization, including maintaining a financially viable organization. This individual will represent the YWCA in the community, building trust and relationships with key stakeholders. In coordination with the leadership, they will oversee all operational decisions regarding programs, facilities, and human resource management within the organization. They will administer supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws while embracing the reality that the facility operates 365 days a year, 24 hours a day.

Specific duties will include, but not necessarily be limited to:

  • Maintains a commitment to the organization’s vision and spirit, advances the anti-racist and anti-sexist mission of YWCA, with an emphasis on the intersectional nature of this mission, centering women and girls of color.
  • Leads and monitors the implementation and evolution of the strategic plan that serves as a living roadmap for the YWCA. Identifies community needs, which could be addressed in the future through YWCA programs. Monitors and reviews all programs to ensure that YWCA is a leading nonprofit organization that innovates client services, responds to changing needs, partners effectively with others, and positively impacts women, children, and families in need. Brands YWCA as a leader in racial justice work.
  • Allocates the operations budget and analyzes departmental budgets to create and maintain a balanced budget for the organization. In conjunction with the CFO, oversees a budget that maintains an accounting system that meets all federal, state, and local compliance standards. Maintains a budget to meet the goals that have been approved by the board. Takes on no new long-term debt. Develops plan for cash flow to cover operational needs. Conducts financial analysis, examining trends and engaging the board in strategic discussions about financial responsibility and sustainability. 
  • Maintains an active role in all fund development activities, securing major gifts and stewarding donors with the Chief Philanthropy Officer (CPO) and philanthropy team. In conjunction with the CPO, grow contributed revenue, income, and reserves to ensure long-term viability. Creatively expands and develops new philanthropic strategies and donor base, making donor relations a priority.
  • Establishes the necessary systems and procedures and delegates responsibility to staff, as needed, to ensure that staff are recruited, selected, employed, and terminated to meet the needs of the organization in accordance with the human resource policies, procedures, and/or practices.
  • Works directly with the Board of Directors and Officers and provides direct supervision to the CFO and CPO as well as all program directors including Youth Programs, Transitional Housing (WIT and FT), and Fitness.
  • Facilitates monthly meetings with the leadership team and monthly meetings with all full-time staff of the organization. Communicates clearly and directly with employees concerning performance expectations, productivity, and accountability and develops employees for future advancement.
  • Promotes the organization within the community in a visible and participatory fashion.
  • Responsible for addressing complaints and resolving problems throughout organization.

  • Politically astute and tactful; attentive to the perspectives and competing interests of various internal and external relationships: employees, program participants, members, families, youth, volunteers, Board of Directors, and supporters.
  • An effective communicator with demonstrated written, presentation, and facilitation skills.
  • Understands and values quality improvement; applies leadership and technical skills to measure and improve efficiency and effectiveness and ensures compliance with all regulatory and contractual obligations.
  • Able to lead a team in managing multiple and often simultaneous tasks and in creating a work environment recognized for a high level of organization, timeliness, cost-effectiveness, accuracy, and results. Adaptable and reliable in the face of conflict.
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion; valuing a diversity of perspectives and encouraging contributions from all team members.
  • 10+ years of experience in a nonprofit business environment; relevant experience in leading human resources, programmatic, and operational functions.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in business is a plus.

COMPENSATION:
Compensation will be commensurate with experience including a competitive base salary, bonus opportunity, and competitive benefits package.
